Robert Shaw vs Craig Chatterton Thursday 11th October, Nomads III vs Darnall & Handsworth [Event "Nomads III vs Darnall & Handsworth"] [Site "Away"] [Date "2012.10.11"] [Round "1"] [White "Robert Shaw"] [Black "Craig Chatterton"] [Result "0-1"] 1. e4 c5 2. Bc4 { The Bowlder Attack, which fell out of favour decades ago, not without reason. } 2... Nc6 3. Nf3 d6 4. Ng5 e6 5. d3 Be7 6. Nf3 { Lost tempo being too aggressive with knight } 6... Nf6 7. O-O O-O 8. Nc3 a6 9. a4 Qd7 10. Re1 { Planning rook to g3 or h3 } 10... b6 11. e5 dxe5 12. Ne4 { Forcing black knight away from f6 } 12... Bb7 13. Nxf6+ Bxf6 14. Re4 Nd4 15. Rg4 { I considered NxN, but felt the exN recapture would leave black with too many lines of attack } 15... Nxf3+ 16. gxf3 g6 { Afterwards, Craig described this move as unnecessary, weakening his position } 17. Bh6 Bg7 18. Qd2 Bxf3 19. Rh4 Bf6 20. Rh3 { I also considered Bg6. Exchanging bishops would have allowed my queen in, but the material gain looked more promising. } 20... Bh5 21. Bxf8 Rxf8 { Material is approximately equal, but white’s position looks better. } 22. Qh6 Bg7 23. Qe3 { Lost tempo again, and e3 is a poor square for my queen. Bringing the a1 rook into play would have been better. } 23... Qe7 24. Bxa6 f5 25. f4 { Intended to block f4, which would leave my queen shut out of the attack, but leaves me vulnerable to a pin } 25... e4 26. dxe4 { Didn’t see the pin coming. I was expecting Craig to push his pawns forward, backed by his pieces, squeezing me. } 26... Bd4 { The game continued for a few unedifying moves after this, while I checked for hidden resources then, finding none, I resigned. } 0-1 You must activate JavaScript to enhance chess game visualization.
