An excellent evening of chess at the Red Lion, London Road. The games were close and indeed four of them were draws, with Nomads’ new kid on the block, Arkady English, maintaining his excellent start for the club – undefeated. But Woodseats secured two wins and took the match.
Usual captain Keith was playing for the A team in Barnsley, so Steve stood in.
First to finish was Les, with a short brutal game that ended in a draw. Meanwhile Steve allowed Chris an early threat of checkmate that could only be stopped by giving up a bishop. This, however, was met shortly after with a nice counter-blunder from Chris, and a draw was agreed in a game both players would rather forget. New Nomad Lucas crumbled early and things weren’t looking good. A draw on board two and defeat for Eric meant Nomads had lost the match.
Ian was last to finish with an interesting queens and pawns endgame from which he secured a draw.
Nomads B team Welcomed SASCA B on Tuesday 17th, it was our 1st league game since the Christmas break, and with both both teams being slightly weaker than normal due to other commitments and player restrictions, the match promised to be a closely fought contest. Nomads were already 1-0 in front before play even began, but the other five games were not so easy, Ian lost in a closely fought contest, Arjun won in his usual slow, but calculating style, Ken drew his game, Steve, although a piece up, but playing against 2 passed pawns managed a draw with his opponent making the drawing move just a slit second before his flag fell, unlucky Steve!!!! Keith the captain and reluctantly playing showed no mercy to his opponent, making sure to maximise any and all mistakes.
