Nomads 2 v Nomads 1 Richardson Cup

Nomads 2 0.5-5.5 Nomads 1
Peter Morton 0-1 Jon Nelson
Ken Dewhurst 0-1 Chris Shephard
Steve Withington 0.5-0.5 Wilson Banda
Duncan Chambers 0-1 Ian Barwick
Keith Wicks 0-1 Geoff Frost
Eric McKenna 0-1 Nick Mahoney

So the great match arrived. Things started very slowly. The 1 team despite their grading advantage were being careful. Geoff was first to finish, despite starting last as a substitute. In a position that looked favourable for Keith, he found two neat tricks both of which won an exchange. Nick was next eventually bursting through Eric’s centre and kingside. Some of the other games looked very close and so it continued. Wilson and Steve drew in an open attacking game. The match was secured when Ken lost on time. It seems that he was not aware of the new time control. On the board Chris had just won a pawn and was exerting pressure. Jon and Peter played a Queenless middle game followed by a long, long ending. Jon only gained a material advantage when it was down to N+3 v N+2. Jon then wrapped the ending up. Finally Ian had been attacking away at Duncan but stood R+2 v 2N. Hard to see who if anyone was making progress. Short of time Duncan shed a N and his position crumbled. 5.5 -0.5 flattered us. Peter an d Duncan probably deserved more than a 0 next to their names.

Nomads 2 vs Stannington

Richardson Plate (Sam Haystead Trophy)

Nomads2 2-4 Stannington
Mike Newett (W) 1-0 Carl Walker
Henry Withington 0-1 John Fletcher
Ken Dewhurst 0-1 Khaled Muflehi
Steve Withington 1/2-1/2 Kier Morton
Duncan Chambers 1/2-1/2 David Grobler
Eric McKenna 0-1 John Mercy

Nomads 2 faced a strong team from Stannington in the semi-finals of the Richardson Plate competition. The highlight was Mike’s win on top board against Carl Walker, while Steve and myself drew with higher graded opponents. In the last game to finish, Ken sacrificed the exchange to obtain a dangerous passed pawn but his opponent was able to cover the queening square and Ken eventually ran out of time. Overall, this was a good performance considering the difference in grades between the teams. Many thanks to everyone who played for Nomads 2 this season.

Nomads 2 vs Ravenfield

Nomads 2 5 1 Ravenfield
Peter Morton (W) 0 1 Tim Gollens
Steve Withington 1 0 Brian England
Keith Wicks 1 0 Barry Shaw
Duncan Chambers 1 0 Roy Evans
Les Day 1 0 David Hill
Eric McKenna 1 0 Martin Wilkes

Despite being a division 5 team, Ravenfield fielded a player graded 169 on top board. However, Nomads had a grade advantage on the remaining boards and this proved enough for a clear win, although as ever most games were hard fought. Thanks to all the players who turned out and we look forward to the next round.

Nomads II vs Aughton

Nomads II 2 4 Aughton
H. Withington (W) 0.5 0.5 K. Marshall
K. Dewhurst 0 1 D. Watson
S. Withington 0.5 0.5 D. Glossop
K. Wicks 0 1 B. Williams
D. Chambers 1 0 J. Reynolds
L. Day 0 1 P. Connolly

Nomads won the toss and played White on odd boards. We gained an early lead with a win on board 5 but Aughton soon equalised by winning board 6. On board 4, Keith seemed to be doing well in a double-rook ending but the next time I looked he had only one rook and his opponent had two… Steve defended actively to gain a draw in an ending a pawn down. Henry’s game looked unclear to me from the outset and eventually ended in another draw. Last to finish was Ken who ran out of time in an ending the exchange down, making the final score 4-2 to the visitors and leaving Nomads 2 to try our luck in the Plate competition. Thanks to everyone for turning out.
