Nomads 2 v Nomads 1 Richardson Cup

Nomads 2 0.5-5.5 Nomads 1
Peter Morton 0-1 Jon Nelson
Ken Dewhurst 0-1 Chris Shephard
Steve Withington 0.5-0.5 Wilson Banda
Duncan Chambers 0-1 Ian Barwick
Keith Wicks 0-1 Geoff Frost
Eric McKenna 0-1 Nick Mahoney

So the great match arrived. Things started very slowly. The 1 team despite their grading advantage were being careful. Geoff was first to finish, despite starting last as a substitute. In a position that looked favourable for Keith, he found two neat tricks both of which won an exchange. Nick was next eventually bursting through Eric’s centre and kingside. Some of the other games looked very close and so it continued. Wilson and Steve drew in an open attacking game. The match was secured when Ken lost on time. It seems that he was not aware of the new time control. On the board Chris had just won a pawn and was exerting pressure. Jon and Peter played a Queenless middle game followed by a long, long ending. Jon only gained a material advantage when it was down to N+3 v N+2. Jon then wrapped the ending up. Finally Ian had been attacking away at Duncan but stood R+2 v 2N. Hard to see who if anyone was making progress. Short of time Duncan shed a N and his position crumbled. 5.5 -0.5 flattered us. Peter an d Duncan probably deserved more than a 0 next to their names.

Darnall & H B vs Nomads

Darnall & H B 0 5 Nomads
Andrew Nettleship 0 1 Steve Withington (w)
Harry Feather 0 1 Les Day
Joel C Fair 0 1 Rob Nield
Colin Greighton 0 1 Eric McKenna
Ralph Batty 0 1 Jo Woollard

Nomads’ first match in the Summer League was played in blistering heat. Fortunately Darnall & Handsworth provided an excellent selection of fine ales. Steve was first to finish with an early pawn promotion, and soothed his parched throat with a Blond Witch and an Old Speckled Hen. Nomads were to win on all boards in some quite tough games.

Nomads B vs Rotherham A

Nomads B 2 4 Rotherham A
Ian Barwick (w) 1/2 1/2 Chris Williams
Ken Dewhurst 1/2 1/2 Pete Ballard
Lucas Roshani 0 1 Ed Sowerby
Steve Withington 1/2 1/2 Chris Willey
Les Day 1/2 1/2 Phil Sharp
Eric McKenna 0 1 Mick Snowdon

Usual captain Keith was playing for the A team in Barnsley, so Steve stood in.

First to finish was Les, with a short brutal game that ended in a draw. Meanwhile Steve allowed Chris an early threat of checkmate that could only be stopped by giving up a bishop. This, however, was met shortly after with a nice counter-blunder from Chris, and a draw was agreed in a game both players would rather forget. New Nomad Lucas crumbled early and things weren’t looking good. A draw on board two and defeat for Eric meant Nomads had lost the match.

Ian was last to finish with an interesting queens and pawns endgame from which he secured a draw.
